What is Trauma?

Trauma happens when a situation or event, or series of events, overwhelms our nervous system.  Trauma can lead to unprocessed emotions and memories that show up in our present day lives, causing chaos and emotional dysregulation.

Memories can be triggered, leading to a range of emotional responses and reactions. It may feel like rage when frustration would be more appropriate or shutting down and withdrawing in a space full of your loved ones.

Trauma symptoms can include nightmares, flashbacks, difficulty relaxing, and problems sleeping. Also anxiety and depression, numbness, and an increase in overall stress.

Trauma can be devastating, impacting on relationships and your ability to do “normal life” with any sense of your typical normal.

There are many situations that can lead to trauma.  Childhood abuse, sexual assault, exposure to horrific events, or constant engagement in intense situations are just a few of the circumstances that can lead to a traumatic experience.

The impact of trauma – an unregulated nervous system – can lead to significant struggles internally, and externally in relationships with colleagues, friends, and family.

What Trauma Therapy Looks Like

Trauma therapy begins with our therapists getting to know you, the important people, relationships, and history that make up your life.  You get to ensure that you feel comfortable with your therapist, and that any of your questions are answered.  Together you develop the goals and the timelines that make the most sense for your situation.

Trauma therapy then occurs in three stages: stabilization, processing, and consolidation.  It is important to recognize that everyone will go through these stages in their own way.  Our trauma therapists will work with you to move forward in a way that is meaningful, bringing a sense of progress and a feeling of relief.

Trauma therapy allows for the potential of deep healing, a reduction in reactivity, and bringing calm into the body and mind.
